Scooter Tuning Adjustment Chart

This table illustrates the adjustment procedure of scooters. An adjustment will often become necessary when parts of the scooter are replaced, even though this does not mandatorily represent an upgrade or tuning. Even the replacement of the exhaust may call for an adjustment of other components of the vehicle. This can be due to different construction designs and modified materials. For the adjustment of the vehicle to new parts mostly only a few steps are needed, but it is very important to provide an optimum driving comfort. Nevertheless, many drivers perform it half-heartedly or do not even pay any attention.

This table is meant to provide some assistance when tuning or purchasing replacement parts. On the left you find the part which is to replace on the scooter. Small crosses indicate what you have to check when replacing the part. Thereby x means that an adjustment is mandatory and (x) that an adjustment may become necessary. Further information you will find when moving the cursor onto the corresponding cross.


														(x)Adjusting vario rollers to a new exhaust: When assembling a replacement exhaust system it is possible that the ideal rpm changes. In this case adjusting the variator rollers will be of much help.			(x)Adjusting the main jet to a new exhaust: When assembling a new exhaust system to a vehicle it’s possible that there is a change in the resonance effect compared to the original exhaust. This is due to slightly different construction of the exhaust systems (cross section, bending, etc.) When fewer or more exhaust fumes are fed back into the combustion chamber the amount of fuel / air mixture alters as well. In order to adjust this amount a smaller or bigger main jet can be installed. Wether the vehicle has the right main jet set up or not can be detected by taking a closer look at the spark plug. Is the spark plug light grey or white? This means a bigger main jet should be installed. In case the spark plug is black a smaller main jet should be assembled. If the spark plug is brown everything works properly.
			xTuning exhaust system and the CDI: A tuning exhaust requires a higher ideal rpm. When the rpm is restricted by a CDI, the new exhaust cannot develop its full power.	xTuning exhaust and restrictions: A tuning exhaust requires a higher ideal rpm. To ensure that the engine will provide the optimum rpm for the exhaust, the vehicle should be completely derestricted.						xAdjusting clutch springs to a tuning exhaust: When installing a tuning exhaust, firmer clutch springs should be installed to use the rpm range ideal for the exhaust. Usually the clutch springs are supplied with the exhaust.				xAdjusting vario rollers to a tuning exhaust: When assembling a tuning exhaust system the rule of thumb says to use 10% lighter variator rollers. Obviously this number is only a benchmark. For one the acceleration is a little different for each vehicle and for another thing the acceleration depends highly on the drivers preferences.			xAdjusting the main jet to a tuning exhaust: According to the rule of thumb, the main jet should be extended by 3-7% when assembling a racing exhaust. Obviously this number is only a benchmark. The main jet still has to be adjusted. To do so it’s easiest to take a closer look at the outcome to throttling. If the engine gets flooded as you accelerate, the main jet should be exchanged for a smaller version. If the engine is spluttering when you’re stepping on the gas, the main jet is too small and should be exchanged for a bigger one. Once this is done the fine tuning of the main jet is done by taking a look at the spark plug. Is the spark plug light grey or white? This means a bigger main jet should be installed. In case the spark plug is black a smaller main jet should be assembled. If the spark plug is brown everything works properly.
				xUnrestricted CDI and restrictions: If the spacer ring and exhaust throttle restrain the engine to reach a higher rpm, the effect of an unlimited CDI is not perceptible. Therefore the vehicle should be derestricted.													xAdjusting the main jet to a tuning CDI: A tuning CDI allows a greater engine speed. The greater speed requires a greater amount of fuel / air mixture. Otherwise the engine runs too lean which lowers it’s durability rapidly. To adjust the main jet to new set up it’s best to take a look at the spark plug. Is the spark plug light grey or white? This means a bigger main jet should be installed. In case the spark plug is black a smaller main jet should be assembled. If the spark plug is brown everything works properly.
						(x)Adjusting the transmission: It's possible to extend the primary and the secondary transmission separatly. But this should only be done to a certain point. Big changes in only one of the transmission parts cause a greater wearout in the other one. That's why we recommend to always tune the primary and the secondary transmission in equal shares. Fitting transmissionparts parts for your scooter you can find with our vehicle filter. Simply insert manufacturer and model of your vehicle and select transmission.								xAdjusting vario rollers to gear changes: When altering the transmission system it’s necessary to adjust the drive system to complement the changes. There is no rule of thumb, because the start-up characteristics depend highly on the vehicle model and the drivers preferences. Quick tip: lighter variator rollers = better acceleration, worse final velocity heavier variator rollers = worse acceleration, better final velocity

										(x)Adjusting clutch springs to a reinforced V-belt: A tuning drive belt provides better start-up acceleration. For further improvement of the acceleration firmer clutch springs can be installed.	xAdjusting the torque spring to a reinforced V-belt: When upgrading to an aramid or kevlar reinforced drive belt it is recommended to exchange the original torque spring for a harder one since tuning drive belts are prone to slipping - especieallly in cold condition.			(x)Adjusting the vario rollers to a reinforced V-belt: When upgrading to an aramid or kevlar reinforced drive belt lighter variator rollers can be used. That is because these tuning belts induce a higher stiction (static friction) at a high rpm and therefore don’t tend to slip as much as regular drive belts. Special case: If the tuning belt is shorter than the original drive belt lighter variator rollers have to be used so that the variator can work within its optimal range.
										(x)Adjusting clutch springs to a tuning clutch: The clutch springs of a tuning clutch have to be adjusted. The optimum firmness of the springs is depending on the vehicle´s tuning level and the desired start-up behaviour (generally between +1000 and +2000 rpm).	(x)Adjusting the torque spring to a tuning clutch:: The mounting of a harder torque spring results in a postponed switching moment (to a higher rpm). This effect enhances the effect of a tuning clutch. In some cases the impact of a tuning clutch only comes to int ffect by assembling a torque spring.
														(x)Adjusting vario rollers to a harder torque spring: A harder torque spring postpones the switching moment. In order to ensure a harmonious interaction within the entire drivetrain it can be necessary to adjust the variator rollers. To know wether the right rollers are used or not: Take the scooter for a ride. If the acceleration is not good enough switch to lighter rollers. When noticing a high rpm and not good enough final velocity heavier rollers should be used. For adjusting the variator rollers there really isn’t a right or wrong, it depends entirely on the drivers preference.
																	xAdjusting the main jet to a tuning air filter box: According to the rule of thumb, the main jet should be extended by 3-7% when assembling a tuning air filter. Obviously this number is only a benchmark. The main jet still has to be adjusted. To do so it’s easiest to take a closer look at the reactrion to throttle. If the engine gets flooded as you accelerate, the main jet should be exchanged for a smaller version. If the engine is spluttering while when the you’re stepping on the gas, the main jet is too small and should be exchange for a bigger one. When this is done the finetuning of the main jet is bestly done by taking a look at the spark plug. Is the spark plug light grey or white? This means a bigger main jet should be installed. In case the spark plug is black a smaller main jet should be assembled. If the spark plug is brown everything works properly.
										(x)Adjusting clutch springs to new vario rollers: If using heavier variator rollers the final speed will increase, but on the other hand the start-up acceleration will decrease. To counteract this effect firmer clutch springs are recommended.
														(x)Adjusting vario rollers to a new variator: A standard variator is usually adjusted correctly to suit one specific vehicle model, but most standard variators fit on many different models and are advertised for these different models as well. If the vehicle the new variator is mounted to isn’t suited to the new model the variator rollers can be adjusted. To know wether the right rollers are used or not: Take the scooter for a ride. If the acceleration is not good enough switch to lighter rollers. When noticing a high rpm and not good enough final velocity heavier rollers should be used. For adjusting the variator rollers there really isn’t a right or wrong, it depends entirely on the drivers preference.
			(x)Tuning variator and CDI: For sport variators which are meant to provide a better start-up only, there is no need to install an unrestricted CDI. Other sport vatiators provide a higher residual speed. If the CDI is restricting the rpm in a way that the variator rollers could not slide to the outer rim of the variator, the desired residual speed cannot be reached. In this case the original CDI has to be replaced by an unrestricted one to take full advantage of the sport variator effect.	xTuning variator and restrictions: When installing a tuning variator, the spacer ring should be removed in order to allow the variator to reach its maximum transmission ratio.				(x)V-belt and tuning variator When installing a tuning variator the original V-belt may not transmit the optimum power. To take advanatage of the new variator, the use of a sport V-belt is recommended. The vehicle may jerk during the run-up which is caused by the V-belt not sufficiently gripping on the variator.		(x)Adjusting clutch springs to a tuning variator: If a tuning variator is assembled in order to enhance the final velocity the usual consequence is a worsen start up acceleration. In order to counteract it’s best to mount firmer clutch springs.	(x)Adjusting torque spring to a tuning variator: When assembling a tuning variator sometimes a harder torque spring is required. The needed is noticeable when the drive belt is slipping through the clutch pulley assy. In this case it is necessary to enhance the pressure on the torque driver with a harder torque spring.			xAdjusting vario rollers to a tuning variator: Tuning variators are usually delivered with variator rollers. These rollers would be perfect if the vehicle the new variator is mounted to is otherwise completely original. To know wether the right rollers are used or not: Take the scooter for a ride. If the acceleration is not good enough switch to lighter rollers. When noticing a high rpm and not good enough final velocity heavier rollers should be used. For adjusting the variator rollers there really isn’t a right or wrong, it depends entirely on the drivers preference.
																	(x)Adjusting the main jet to a new carburetor: OEM carburetors are usually calibrated to a certain vehicle model. This means they can be mounted on a specific motor type and therefore on many different vehicles but they are adjusted to only one of them. If the replacement carburetor is mounted to one of the other vehicles an adjustment of the main jet becomes necessary. This can only be done by taking a look at the spark plug. Is the spark plug light grey or white? This means a bigger main jet should be installed. In case the spark plug is black a smaller main jet should be assembled. If the spark plug is brown everything works properly.
	(x)Tuning carburetor requires bigger intake manifold: When upgrading with a tuning carburetor the intake manifold has to be replaced as well, since the inner aperture of carburetor and intake manifold have to match.																xAdjusting the main jet in a tuning carburetor: When a tuning carburetor is assembled the set up can be adjusted by adjusting the main jet. The fine tuning should be done by looking at the spurk plug. Is the spark plug light grey or white? This means a bigger main jet should be mountet. In case the spark plug is black a smaller main jet should be assembled. If the spark plug is brown everything works properly.
																	(x)Adjusting the main jet to an OEM cylinder When exchanging the cylinder sometimes the main jet needs to be adjusted. Even little changes on the engine alter the required amount of fuel / air mixture. Whether the main jet needs to be adjusted or not can be found out by takting a look at the spark plug. Is the spark plug light grey or white? This means a bigger main jet should be installed. In case the spark plug is black a smaller main jet should be assembled. If the spark plug is brown everything works properly and the main jet is fine as it is.
	(x)Tuning cylinder and intake manifold: Since a tuning cylinder requires more air / fuel mixture than the original cylinder, the installation of a tuning carburetor is essential. This in turn requires an intake manifold with a larger inner aperture.		(x)Tuning cylinder and CDI: When the installed CDI is featuring a speed limiting function which is restricting the engine power, it should be replaced. Otherwise the installation of a tuning cylinder would be ineffective.	xTuning cylinder and restrictions: The increased power of a tuning cylinder cannot be unleashed when the vehicle is restricted.						(x)Adjusting clutch springs to a tuning cylinder: Firmer clutch springs are suitable to adjust the start up acceleration to the rest of the set up. The degree of rigidity depends on the degree of tuning of the vehicle.. There are clutch spring adjustment sets from NARAKU and Malossi available in our shop.			(x)A tuning cylinder needs more air: Due to the much bigger cross section of the inlet and over flow channels in a tuning cylinder a greater amount of fuel / air mixture is needed. To provide this amount the main jet is increased which allows more fuel to get inside the carburetor. In order to obtain the ideal ratio between fuel and air the air adjusting screw can be set. If these adjustments aren’t enough a sports air filter can be assembled. Wether the mixture is right or not can be determined by looking at the spark plug. As an inconspicuous alternative too the loud an extravagant looking sports air filter an additional air filter can be installed as well.	xAdjusting vario rollers to a tuning cylinder: When mounting a sports cylinder it’s necessary to adjust the transmission system due to the higher ideal rpm of a sports cylinder compared to a standard cylinder. In most cases lighter variator rollers are needed. To know wether the right rollers are used or not: Take the scooter for a ride. If the acceleration is not good enough switch to lighter rollers. When noticing a high rpm and not good enough final velocity heavier rollers should be used. For adjusting the variator rollers there really isn’t a right or wrong, it depends entirely on the drivers preference.		(x)Tuning cylinder and carburetor The cross section of the over flow channels in a tuning cylinder is bigger than in a standard cylinder. These bigger channels make a greater amount of fuel / air mixture necessary. To provide this amount a bigger main jet has to be installed and the adjusting screw has to be turned in a way that allows more air to be sucked into the carburetor. If these adjustments are not sufficient the set up needs a sport carburetor with a bigger inner aperture.	xAdjusting the main jet to a sport cylinder The installation of a tuning cylinder entails a greater need of fuel / air mixture. Otherwise the engine runs too lean and in the worst case has a piston seizure. In order to prevent this from happening the feed of enough oil can be ensured by mounting a larger main jet. According to the rule of thumb, it should be about 5-10% larger than the original main jet. Obviously this number is only a benchmark. The fine tuning of the jet has to happen with a closer look at the spark plug after driving for a while.
	(x)70cc cylinder requires bigger intakt manifold Since a 70cc cylinder has a bigger cubic capacity it needs a greater amount of fuel / air mixture than a standard cylinder. That's why it's oft necessary to upgrade to a to a tuning carburetor. This carburetor again needs a greater intakt manifold. A click on this X will get you to a video where you can see how to exchange carburetor and manifold.	x70cc tuning cylinder requires a tuning exhaust: Since a 70cc cylinder develops more emissions and higher temperatures, a adequate exhaust is required. A tuning exhaust features a bigger diameter and therefore performs better in leading off the emissions.	(x)70cc cylinder and CDI When the installed CDI is featuring a speed limiting function which is restricting the engine power, it should be replaced. Otherwise the installation of a tuning cylinder would be ineffective.	x70cc cylinder and restrictions: The increased power of a tuning cylinder cannot be unleashed when the vehicle is restricted.	(x)Adjusting the gear to a 70cc cylinder: Not every type of a 70ccm cylinder will require a modification of the gear. When installing a mid-race or a high end 70ccm cylinder, a gear modification is recommended. This is due to the strong engine power. At the point of the V-belt having its highest transmission ratio, the power unit reaches the limit regarding effective power transmission. A longer gear ratio is required to reach a higher final speed. In regard to the primary transmission it means that the pinion on the gearbox input shaft has to be replaced by a larger one and the gripping pinion on the center shaft by a smaller one. Thus more torque-speed is transmitted to the rear wheel. It is important that primary and secondary gear are tuned consistantly when making profound modifications since pinions with a shorter gear ratio will wear out faster. Tuning drive belts are reinforced with aramid or kevlar and are much more resistant to the acting forces. Furthermore, sports drive belts provide a better power transmission.	x70cc cylinder requires tuning clutch Through heat-resitant clutch linings with more friction a tuning clutch is sustaining the increased engine power. The original clutch would wear out a lot faster.	(x)Adjusting clutch springs to a 70cc cylinder: Firmer clutch springs are suitable to adjust the start up acceleration to the rest of the set up. The degree of rigidity depends on the degree of tuning of the vehicle.. There are clutch spring adjustment sets from NARAKU and Malossi available in our shop.	xAdjusting the torque spring to a 70cc cylinder: A bigger cylinder generates greater forces to act on the drive system. In order to prevent the drive belt just slipping through the clutch pulley assy under this force, it is recommended to assemble a harder torque spring.	(x)70cc cylinder only with top notch crankshaft: When upgrading to a 70cc cylinder take a good look at the crankshaft and its bearings. If these things are in good condition there’s no need to replace them. If on the other hand these parts have defects or a high mileage they should be replaced. In this case it’s recommended to assemble a tuning crankshaft. The reason for this is the increased force of a bigger cylinder acting on the crankshaft. With midrace and high-end cylinders a sports crankshaft should be installed as a priority.	xA 70cc cylinder requires more air: When upgrading to a 70cc cylinder more fuel / air mixture will be needed. In order to provide the necessary air for this mixture a sports air filter should be assembled. As an inconspicuous alternative an additional air filter can be installed as well.	xAdjusting vario rollers to a 70cc cylinder: When mounting a sports cylinder it’s necessary to adjust the transmission system due to the higher ideal rpm of a sports cylinder compared to a standard cylinder. In most cases lighter variator rollers are needed. To know wether the right rollers are used or not: Take the scooter for a ride. If the acceleration is not good enough switch to lighter rollers. When noticing a high rpm and not good enough final velocity heavier rollers should be used. For adjusting the variator rollers there really isn’t a right or wrong, it depends entirely on the drivers preference.	(x)The variator with a new 70cc set up: Depending on to what you want to achieve with the larger cylinder the variator should be adjusted to the new set up. Different pully lead angles and roller paths influence the transmissions behaviour greatly. Wether the variator should be exchanged or not is up to the drivers preference. Depending on which kind of start-up characteristics and final velocity you are going for. But in case you do mount a new variator: Make sure to get new variator rollers as well.	(x)70cc cylinder requires a tuning carburetor: Since a 70cc cylinder has a bigger cubic capacity it needs a greater amount of fuel / air mixture than a standard cylinder.
